Tournament Information

Sawyer's Martial Arts students actively compete in many tournaments throughout the year. If you are interest in competition, I suggest talking to an instructor about locations and divisions as rules may change between locations and competition leagues.

If you are new to tournament competition, I recommend starting out trying our Federation run tournaments. These tournaments are only for Cheezic Tang Soo Do students, so you will have much more familiar atmosphere. They have an established set of rules which the judges are trained and updated on annually offering a consistent platform for grading. It's also a somewhat local tournament, in Waterbury, with a low starting cost, only $35. With four tournaments a year, it is is a great way to get your feet wet.

The following is a guide and advice about the different forms of martial arts competition, what to expect, and focus points to help make sure you do your best.

This guide is broken down into two sections, click below or use the navigation at the bottom to go to the next page.

Topics

Forms & Weapons
Sparring
{pagebreak}

Forms & Weapons

Form competition at most tournaments is done as an individual performance which is rated by three to five judges using a predetermined score range. For instance, green and red belts may receive scores from 8.0 to 9.0, where black belts will generally receive scores from 9.0 to 9.9. Very rarely will there be a 10 given out since most pracitioners feel that 10, a perfect score, is not achievable. These score ranges may change depending on the size of your division and it shouldn't concern you too much what the range is. What is important is how your average score rates against your competitions. The person with the highest average score will be declared the winner of the division.

Most forms and weapons divisions start by bowing in and establishing the order of presentation. Judges may not disclose the full order, but they will usually inform you if you are up next or "On Deck." In order to get a feel for the division and the score range, the first three competitors will be called up to perform their form and receive no score after the third competitor competes. Once he or she is finished, they will be called back up individually in the same order to receive their scores. All other competitors after will be called up and scored after their presentation. There is some theory that being in or out of the first three can effect your ability to place. While this may hold some truth, it is my experience that great presentation speaks for itself and will always get higher scores than OK presentations no matter where the competitor is in the line. Since you have no control over your order, you should focus more on your form than where you are in the order.

When you are called up next, bow and position yourself at the entrance of the ring, usually the back corner. If there is no established entrance, stand just outside the ring in either back corner. When the person ahead of you finishes they should move towards the back and bow towards the judges and then to you, signifying respect and your turn to present. Bow back. If they do not, don't worry about. Bow before entering the ring, walk down the ring line to the center, turn to the judges, bow, walk up to about two to three steps from the judges and bring yourself to attention, bow and attention again. This entrance is your first impression to the judges, so it is important to make it your best: deep bows, straight posture, crisp movement, strong attention and head turns. Looking good here tells the judges you are a dedicated martial artist prepared for competition.

You may now begin your introduction. As with any introduction, it tells the judges about you, your style and what to expect. While there is no standard introduction between tournaments and styles, following the protocol below will clearly tell the judges who you are and what you are there to do.

Hello Judges, my name is [your name]. My style is Cheezic Tang Soo do. My instructor is Master Mark Sawyer. With your permission I will step back and begin my form, [form name]. Judges, may I please begin? [Judges will nod or say yes] Thank you Judges.

Be sure to speak loud, clear and confidently to make sure you are heard. If you do not have a form name, that is ok. You do not have to give them a form name. The judges will always give you permission to begin. You should bow and thank the judges. Take enough steps back to give you enough room to perform your form. Make sure you have enough room to keep the form inside the ring.

Judges look for:

Attitude. Be strong, look strong. If you are shrugged over and staring at the ground you will appear to lack attitude.

Crisp, firm, strikes. Make sure they have the correct amount of height.

Tension where appropriate

Smooth movements with strong stances. Avoid having to adjust yourself after you complete the move, try to nail it each time.

Avoid bouncing and bobbing between moves and after completion.

Head Turns

Strong, loud, yells

Strength and balance

Focus

Mistakes

As a judge, I look for all of these things and I also consider the competitors introduction. I often see that competitors with strong introductions have strong forms. It is important to note the inclusion of mistakes at the end. Judges, whether they are the same style or a different one, are judging you based on the set of movements you present to them. While they may have the same form at their school, they do not know how you were taught the form and realize that moves change between schools. An open hand block may be closed. A side kick may be a round house kick. Moves may be combined or seperated.

Because of this, judges view mistakes as obvious errors. An obvious error can be turning to face one direction and then shifting to face another. It can be changing a strike to a block with uncertainty. Or it can be a long pause, often with a look of thought or confusion. It can also be having to move in order to avoid going out of the ring - You should know how much space your form takes up. Mistakes are usually easy to spot and it's OK to make them. However, to minimize point deductions, the better you are able to recover and move on as if nothing happened, the better the chance no one will notice.

Note: Dropping your weapon in nearly every turnamanet is considered to be automatic 0 score. If you drop your weapon pick it up, return to attention, bow and thank the judges for the opportunity to perform.

{pagebreak}

Sparring

Most sparring tournaments are 3 point under belt and 5 point black belt matches; often with a two minute time limit. Many tournaments allow head contact, but remember that federation events are NO head contact functions. If you are not sure, it is best to ask the head judge to go over the rules before your division starts.

You should be geared up and standing ready off to the side for your name to be called. Your matches will be set up in a bracket system bases on the number of division competitors. An ideal bracket system would start with 2 competitors in the finals and double to the last bracket. (2, 4, 6, 8, 16) If there are more than four competitors, there will be elimination matches and not everyone will place. Placing can be very rewarding, but often you learn more about yourself and what you need to improve on when you lose. So don't feel bad if you do not always do as well as you hoped.

While regular attendance is required, testing eligibility is not restricted to any specific attendance plan. We are committed to creating the best students possible, which often means challenging them to meet high expectations. It is our goal to make every test a great success, we will not invite students to test that we feel will not perform at their very best.

Students should ready themselves by practicing their techniques, one steps, self defense, sparring, breaking and all forms. Students who work hard and demonstrate progress will find reward for their efforts.

Integrity
All Tang Soo Do practitioners strive to be honest, sincere, noble and upright. This virtue of integrity serves as the foundation upon which all others stand.

Concentration
Focusing our mind I one of the most important elements in Tang Soo Do, and concentration is the most required factor. The human grain is capable of thinking many things at once and changing thoughts at very rapid speeds. The ability to focus on one matter from our fleeting thought is concentration. It starts with “paying attention”, followed by avoiding all other thoughts while rejecting outer interference then maintaining the state of consciousness. The stage can be heightened ultimately to the capability of learning and fulfilling tasks.

Perseverance
Nothing can be achieved without persistent and repeated effort. This resolute pursuit is the only way to reach the final destination – the goal. The highest goal is always located behind steep peaks which costs you pain and sacrifice. In the training of Tang Soo Do, an enduring willpower should be cultivated.

Respect & Obedience
This implies a tolerant and sincere effort to understand and appreciate the customs and values of other people. Students should be able to subordinate their own personal ego or vanity to the order of the instructor and to the dojang rules.

Self-Control
Taoist Lao Tzu quoted, “Winning over self is truly more difficult than conquering another person.” Indeed, control by self is needed for that high level of cultivated character. Students should not lose prudence, but should discover self first and learn to control that self.

Humility
Tang Soo Do training requires many bowings (kyung yet) through the entire training regimen. Bowing trains the students in self-respect and humility. Humility is a winning power against arrogance. Humility does not make enemies, but it brings you a winning sense and superior feelings. Blockage of this virtue is a selfish and egotistic attitude. Often it results in abhorrence and isolation from others. Be humble, continue to criticize and correct yourself, not others, then you will achieve your humility “While empty heads and grain stand straight, the ripe grain bends.”

Indomitable Spirit
A ceaseless struggle with adversity is one of the most essential elements in making you a success. In general, life is full of trials, tribulations, and chances of failure. However, differences start from the point where one stands up and tries again, or simply gives up. Proper Tang Soo Do training incorporates this resolute and unflinching determination, “A winner never quits and a quitter never wins.”

Rules of The Dojang

Class Arrival:
Students should arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the start of their class in order to prepare. Arriving late is considered disrespectful to the Dojang and should be avoided when possible. If you are late to class please quietly prepare yourself and stretch as necessary on the side, an instructor will bow you in when appropriate. If you are bowed in while training is in progress you should line up next to the lowest rank until the next redress is called. At this point you should line up at your current rank.

Bowing:
It is martial arts tradition to bow when entering and exiting the Dojang. Bowing is a sign of respect to our style, school, instructor and classmates. It is also appropriate to bow when addressed by a senior rank in class.

Addressing Instructors & Students:
Our class uses formal names. Always address fellow students by their last name, preceded by Mr./Mrs./Miss or Sir/Ma'am. Black belts who hold a Master rank should always be addressed with a Master followed by their last name. This applies at the Dojang, federation events, and other martial arts related activities.

Questions:
During class it is considered impolite to speak, especially while an instructor is talking. If you have a question, raise your hand until you are addressed an instructor, bow first, and then ask the question. It is polite to bow after receiving your answer.

Communication:
Students should always treat other classmates, guests and martial artists with respect. Students should refrain from negative or demeaning remarks towards others.

Sitting:
There are times during class when students will be required to sit and wait. The proper seated position is legs crossed in front and hands resting over the knees. Students should never lean against a wall while sitting. Students with physical conditions or limitations should discuss this with an instructor before hand.

Safety:
Our students and guests safety is our primary concern. Always practice safe habits and be aware of your surroundings. Do not spar or use equipment without permission and supervision of a black belt instructor. If see or feel unsafe in the Dojang, notify an instructor immediately. If you are sick, please stay home as to not spread or interrupt class.

Behavior:
Students should not engage in any behavior in or outside of the Dojang that would reflect negatively on our school, its members, or the Federation.

Moving Through the Line:
When moving through or around the line, such as to go to the bathroom or to break off into smaller groups, always bow, then step back facing your instructor, and move behind the line.

Teaching:
Unless otherwise directed, students should avoid teaching or correcting others technique during class. That is the instructor's responsibility and ensures consistency in technique.

They are not only the first group of students from Sawyer's Martial Arts to receive this title, but they are also the largest group from the same school to test at the same time! Great job!
