By far the BEST dojang in Connecticut! Master Mark Sawyer is a 7th degree black belt and wins numerous competitions yearly. His teaching is fantastic and the students learn so much. Students from this dojang learn not only Tang Soo Do, but also discipline and character. Would recommend to anyone looking for a great karate school. The price is also extremely reasonable and they don't nickel and dime you. School is on street level and no stairs, which is great for parents who have to bring in a stroller or wheel chair. Highly recommend!

If you want a place where your children will be handed a black belt because you paid for it, Sawyer's is not for you.
Master Sawyer, and the numerous master belts he has trained, have built a school based on two principles: respect and hardwork. The students in Master Sawyer's school can set their own pace, but Master Sawyer always pushes them to surpass their limits. In sparring sessions students fight with control, and always at the same level as their opponents. It is not uncommon to see a black belt fight a white belt, and appear to be even, and then fight another black belt and it looks like two angry tigers fighting.

Excellent! My son is shy, in his first class he received one on one instruction. It took 15-20 before he finally complied with the instruction, and by the end he was engaged in the class. My son is looking forward to his next class!

We were pleasantly surprised at the structure and focus provided to each student. We were also very happy with the regular pricing once our groupon ends. My son loves his instructors and there's many class times to choose from so he can go several times a week. We would highly recommend!

Self Defense

Self defense for teens and adults is more than just keeping cool in a situation and taking precautions.

Our self defense system gives you the confidence and training to properly defend yourself or a loved one in the event a dangerous situation should arise.

We teach our self defense as a regular part of class. Applying techniques, stances, and movements learned along the way.

Traditional Forms

As a traditional martial art, part of Tang Soo Do involves learning sets of movements and techniques called forms.

Forms reinforce the techniques you learn while training and provide a foundation for growth. These forms require both focus and discipline to master.

Adults learn forms as part of their training at Sawyer’s Martial Arts. Forms promote strong fundamentals, technique, balance, speed, and power as well as a great cardio work out.

Sparring

Students of all levels regularly practice the art of sparring at Sawyer’s Martial arts.

This controlled contact fighting reinforces proper technique and develops fast thinking, endurance, strength and discipline.

Sparring exercises the mind as much as the body. Proper planning, movement, timing, and execution are required to succeed as students progress to higher levels.

Sparring is an optional practice at the end of many classes.
